Ted’s blog

Hello, my name is Ted, and I am an Australian Labradoodle.

I spent the first few years of my life in York with another family. Due to a change in circumstances, Sr. Jennifer and Liz later found me through Doodle Rescue and chose to welcome me into their lives with kindness and care. They travelled to bring me to what would soon become my forever home at the convent.

For nearly three years now, I have been part of life here, and it has been a truly special place to call home. In the quiet rhythm of each day and the gentle presence of those around me, I have found not just comfort, but a real sense of belonging. There is something deeply meaningful about being part of such a warm and caring community. Whether I am greeting visitors, resting nearby, or simply sharing in the everyday moments, I like to think I bring a little joy and companionship to those around me.

Looking back, it feels as though this is where I was always meant to be. The convent has given me more than a home — it has given me love, care, and a true sense of peace.

Ted’s Christmas and Winter Highlights

I had a truly lovely Christmas at St Mary’s. The house was full of life, with many visitors, relatives and friends coming to spend time with residents. There were children singing carols and all sorts of entertainers bringing joy to the season. I made sure everyone felt welcome at the door, greeting them with a wag of my tail and a cheerful woof.

Elia, on the other hand, prefers a quieter approach and tends to retreat when the house is busy. She has a cosy bed tucked away under the stairs (a place I know I’m not allowed!), and sometimes you’ll find her resting peacefully on the radiator near the chapel. Recently, we’ve both enjoyed spending time with Liz on her new recliner sofa — occasionally even side by side. I do my best not to chase her, although every now and then the flick of her tail gets the better of me… and she’s quick to remind me of my manners!

It has also been a pleasure to welcome visiting dogs to the Home. Some come regularly, and I’ve come to know them quite well. Our volunteer Pippa visits most weeks with the PAT dogs, and I understand they are here for important work when they come. I am always happy to greet visitors, but if you’re a little unsure around dogs — or visiting with one — just let reception know. I’ll happily be on my lead and take extra care when meeting you.

I was very lucky to receive some wonderful Christmas presents from my regular friends, both human and canine — thank you so much for the toys, balls and treats! Elia would also like to say thank you for her gifts. We can both be a little particular with food, and I follow a grain-free diet, so if you’d like to give me a treat, please do ask at reception. Jan and Katherine have some that are just right for me.

In January, we took a short trip to Norfolk, where I enjoyed spending time with friends. It was a lovely change of scenery, and I was very happy to return to my usual walks and daily life at the convent afterwards.
